Cosmetic colorant is important because color tone of people change as they grow old. Direct sunlight is a critical factor as it changes the color of the skin.Besides this, four color theory is vital for a makeup artist. So, nowadays, pigment colors are the chosen ones as they help in getting the color that you need.
The cosmetic colorants fill up the beauty in cosmetics. These colorants emphasize the quality of the cosmetics.
Another important point is that dyes are widely used in cosmetic industry. Actually, dyes provide the actual color required in the cosmetic products such as lipsticks, nail paints, blusher, color palettes etc.
Pigment colors are used to achieve a perfect color shade in the products.
We all know that beauty trends come and go. Now, the trend of super glossy lips has been replaced by color-rich matte lipsticks. So, what is behind this change? Why is matte creating revolution?
Nowadays, we find matte lipsticks and they are in fashion. Let us explore the making of a matte lipstick.
Lipstick generally contains wax, oils, antioxidants and emollients.
  • Wax – It provides the structure and hardness to the lipstick. In general, lipsticks may contain several waxes but almost all lipsticks always include carnauba wax because of its’ high melting point. Other waxes you might find are beeswax, candelilla or ozocerite.
  • Oils – Usually, various oils and fats are also used in lipsticks, such as olive oil, mineral oil, cocoa butter, lanolin, and petrolatum.
Lipsticks get their colors from a variety of pigments and lake dyes. Pink lipsticks, are made by mixing titanium dioxide and red shades.
When adding pigments to lipstick you can start at around 2% total weight. That would be 2 grams of pure dye pigment to 90 grams of base. The easiest way to add it would be to mix it will with castor oil and then add it to your melted base.
Matte Lipsticks contain more filling agents like silica or mica and less emollients. In matte, large ratio of pigment powder loaded into it compared to a typical lipstick. It is a fact that a matte lip can make everyone look more glamorous in pictures. Usually, in matte, the strong color can guide the eyes towards the screen. Pigment overload is another reason for the matte color to stay. These color colorants are using new polymers that create a comfortable, long lasting film. So, you do not have to reapply repeatedly, it holds the color for longer hours.
So, matte is indeed brining revolution. Compared to glossy lipsticks, flat pigment stays the longest. Secondly, they do not stain on cups. On the flip side, matte lipstick longevity means you will find colors that you can live with all day.

Certified colors are a must for cosmetics. For colors that are made from organic sources, certifications may not be required but compliance rules must be followed. Extreme care is taken to manufacture colors by established manufacturers.
Major color cosmetic manufacturers nowadays use organic or synthetic colors based on the preference of clients who generally want high-quality cosmetic colors. Cosmetic dyes and cosmetic pigments are used in the production of cosmetic colorants. Reputed color cosmetic & pigment manufacturers in India always adhere to the rules and regulations for producing cosmetic dyes in India.
Before proceeding, we must know about color cosmetics and the use of dyes in cosmetics. It is a fad. Basically, color cosmetic is all about dye or colorant. These colorants emphasize the quality of the cosmetics.
Dyes are important for the cosmetic industry. They help in providing the real color required in the cosmetic products such as lipsticks, nailpaints, blusher, colorpalettes etc. Generally, pigments are used to produce and achieve a perfect color shade in the products.

Colors : The Real Differentiator For Cosmetics

Cosmetics are like diamonds to women. Makeup kits and cosmetic sets are sold in thousands every year. So, you can understand how important it is for the manufacturers to maintain the quality of the cosmetics. But, what is really important is the variety of colors that are used in the cosmetics. This is the ultimate factor that decides how a woman/man will look. Another reason why cosmetic color is so important is because the color tone of people changes as they grow old. Also, there is a certain change in the skin color tone when there is direct sunlight. While discussing about color and how light can have an impact on it, one thing that you need to know is the contrasting effect. Apart from this there is also the four color theory that is considered vital by makeup artists. In this aspect, pigment colors are the chosen ones as they help in getting the color that you need.
If you have used cosmetics before, you will understand that colors are also associated with a certain value, chroma and hue. Here is what value, chroma and color represent in the cosmetic industry:
  • Value – it represents the lightness or darkness of the color. So, if you are going in a place where there is a already too much of light, then the color value has to be on the lower side and if the place is dark, then the color value has to be high.
  • Chroma – it is basically the intensity that the color represents. The amount of color that you will be using is known as chroma. One thing that you need to keep in mind is that the chroma and value has to go hand in hand. Any diversion or imbalance between them would result in an incorrect makeup. It would be best if you learn about the ideal balance of chroma and value before starting to use the cosmetic or makeup.
  • Hue – this is the actual color code that is given to the sample. Many people think that hue and value are the same, but they are not. Hue is what controls the value and chroma together. Just like chroma and value are directly related, similarly it is the hue that decides how much the value and chroma will be.
Color reflection is another aspect that is important in the cosmetic industry. Starting from mica colors for cosmetics to lake colors, the reflecting property of the colors used in the cosmetics will help understand how the glossy or matte finish is achieved. Additionally, the reflection will also decide if the makeup will be opaque or transparent. The best way to understand color reflection for cosmetics is by checking the various foundations on your lipsticks. In fact, the dress that you will be wearing also has a lot to say about the cosmetic that you will be using. Color combination will come into play again and you will have to go back to hue, chroma and value again to decide.

Cosmetic Colours: A Detailed Understanding

From shades of lipstick, hues of bronzer, luminosity of highlighter till vibrancy of blusher or depth of mascara, the essence of every beauty product lies in its colour. Just like an artist transforms a blank canvas into a masterpiece with the perfect blend of colours, the cosmetic colorants have the ability to turn pale face to sun-kissed natural glow and that too with a single stroke of brush. But, how do these colorants amplify the quality of cosmetics and what goes into their making? Read on to find out more.
The Different Types of Cosmetic Colorants
The cosmetic colour is broadly classified into two categorizes which are:
  • Organic colour and
  • Inorganic colour
Organic colours are made up of certified D & C (Drug and Cosmetic) ingredients and they are commonly denoted as lakes. While inorganic colours are composed of zinc oxide, mica, carmine, ultramarine and iron oxide that offer opacity and thus are essential for cover-up makeup products such as foundation and concealer.
What is the Role of Colour Theory in Cosmetic Industry?
Colour theory is an invaluable tool of the cosmetic industry. The theory revolves around key aspects of makeup and these include pigment, dimension of colours, harmonies and reflectiveness.
Understanding the role of these elements can help you analyze makeup colour trends
  • Pigment: Any form of makeup, be it oil based, water based, mineral, cake, stick or cream, comes under the first aspect of colour theory i.e. pigments – they provide colour to the cosmetic. No matter what their nature, source, mineral or chemical might be, the same theory implies for all.
  • Dimensions: The dimension brings depth of the colour by enriching it with accurate intensity, right hue and value. The intensity is the brightness or the measure of strength & purity while value defines how dark or light the colour is.
  • Harmonies: Harmony is an important characteristic of aesthetically pleasing pigment colours. These can be complementary colours (blushers, illuminators, bronzers), colour triads (contour palette, highlighters) and split complementary (eye shadow palette). For example, a highlighter palette can have not only one but multiple shades of colour such as rose gold, warm beige and peach honey, where a combination of three would bring out a perfect natural look.
  • Reflectiveness: The wavelength of colour varies from one another. Hence, limited lake colours are often used to create wider range of shades with optimal reflectiveness and shine. The range of reflectivity is equivalent to the shine of pigments.
Things to Consider For Quality Control of Colorants
While creating colorant standards for cosmetics there are three essential factors to consider. First, evaluate at least three lots of materials from pigment manufacturers in India and notice the difference in their composition, substrate and synthesis. Next, consult with the supplier to know more about the standards and test methods implemented for the process of manufacturing.
At last, ensure that you choose the right form of colorants for cosmetic products because opting for something that does not meet the desired parameters can be problematic.
